Thornwood Camp
Thornwood Camp, on which Woodside Industrial Estate is situated, was established as a Training Camp as part of North Weald Airfield during the Second World War. It was constructed as a barracks on land requisitioned from local farmers and was primarily used for training associated with the nearby Airfield.
It housed a number of Royal Air Force personnel, many of whom reference the Camp in their memories of this period.

Following the end of the war, it was then for a short time used by the Air Cadets who used to use the buildings for training with some of the old bunkers still remaining on the site.
It was returned to local landowners in the Post War years who turned the then redundant buildings into a mix of industrial uses, focused at that time on farming and storage services.
The site, along with North Weald Airfield, was used in the filming of the Battle Of Britain film (1969) and some of its buildings can be seen in the background of the aircraft take-off sequences.
Protecting History
The site was purchased in April 2015 by GT Commercial Holdings Ltd who own a number of other commercial sites in Essex.
Having purchased the site, the company has focused its efforts on improving the existing buildings whilst retaining the historical features which have made it such a creative place to work, many of which have existed since their construction.
The Future
The company has worked to gain planning permission to add an additional 30,000 sq ft of buildings which are currently under construction.
These new units are of a high-quality construction compliant to the latest building standards but designed to blend in with the buildings on site, to create a positive and proactive place to base your business.
This vision to give the site a viable commercial future for all of its tenants is bringing new life to the estate along with protecting its valuable place in the area’s history.
New and refurbished units available.
